My husbands has stage 4 melanoma in his lungs. He has been on a clinical trial for 21 months now. The tumor is increasing in size and now the doctor tells us he needs to get on a blood thinner (fragmin) because his arteries are clogging. He said this is common in cancer patients. Can anyone tell me if this is so wing they have either heard of or have experienced themselves. I'm very concerned. Can this be treated?
any suggestions would be very appreciated.

Hello,
My husband was Stage IV and had melanoma in his lungs, liver and at the C1-C2 Cervial spine (unresectable). He also developed pulmonary thrombosis (it was found on the CT scan he had as a routine scan) and had to be admitted to the hospital. They took him by ambulance and wouldn't even let me drive him because they said it was to risky.
He spent 11 days in the hospital first on IV's to thin his blood and then they started him on warfarin and he had to stay until they got it regulated. He was told then that it happens to many cancer patients and is something they see a lot of since they are more susceptible to it.
They found during a vein scan of the leg that they gave to him that he had a clot that started breaking up and he had a blood clot in each lung. He took the warfarin for 1 year and has since been taken off of it.
He was on a clinical trial when they found these.

Thank you for your response. Although, now I'm more frightened. The doctor didn't seem all that concerned at he time he told us & I don't know how severe his particular occlusion is. I'm waiting for the prescription to arrive since it needed to come from a specialty pharmacy. I'm suppose to inject him daily. His doctor said we'll see how it looks in 30 days. Are there any special precautions we should be taking? The doctor didn't tell us anything except not to take Alleve for his arthritis but instead take Tylenol.

I imagine you will receive a pamphlet with the medication. He was supposed to watch the amount of dark green vegetables he ate and anything that is a great thing for blood clotting times. Which is alot of the healthy things you are supposed to eat with cancer.
Also he was told no Cranberries or juice from cranberries as they can go either way with clotting or thinning the blood. Each person is different. And then there are the blood checks to see the thickness of the blood which you have either with a vial of blood or a finger stick a lot like for diabetes with a special meter that tells you the consistency and the clotting time.
Our insurance would not pay for the shots so he took his in pill form. Here is hoping the best outcome and that the blood clots don't cause anymore problems.

I havea not had a problem with Pulmonary thrombosis, but during some of tshe Immunotherapy treatments have received blood thinners and been tol to stop supplements that have a blood thinning effect. while on the treatments.
