I had LND in arm and I can tell you that it'll take any where from 2-4 months for the nerves to grow back.  It's hard to be patient , i know I wasn't.  I had weird things going on, like numbness in my fingers, loss of strength in my thumb but that came back in about 3 months.  Tell him to do the stretching exercises the doc suggests, if the doc doesn't suggest ask!  Also watch for lymphedema.  I found Lymphedemapeople website to be helpful.
